Interview with ItsJaku!

On December 23rd 2021 AnimalBot99 got to interview ItsJaku. Hope you enjoy reading!

Animal: Hello Jaku, why don’t we begin with what do you do on Roblox?

Jaku: Hey Animal, thanks for the invitation! So what do I do on Roblox? Well I do lots of things like building and making games.

Animal: I know that from your portfolio you’ve helped many big name developers & games, have you learned anything from developing with them?

Jaku: Yes. Mostly I have learned a lot of tips and tricks in the sphere of building and game design.

Animal: Do you ever use any tricks you’ve learned for any solo builds?

Jaku: I see experience as this big sack of things that gets bigger by practicing and learning. When making something you apply the things you have in the sack sometimes you might get some things lost in the sack and other things might completely fall out of it but if you consistently apply the things from the sack they won’t fall out.

Animal: Any specific tricks you learned that helped you build better?

Jaku: As I said earlier there are a lot, I have made a separate article about them (It's a bit outdated but still has a lot of useful info)
The big thing that helped me improve a lot was practicing off of references. I just googled up something cool and just modeled the thing I saw.

Animal: Seeing some of your builds they are really breathtaking and overall amazing to look at, how long does it usually take to complete a full build?

Jaku: Hard to say. It's all in the motivation. Sometimes you build 10 minutes a day for a month or two. Other times you just sit down and get the whole thing done in a day. On average it takes me like a month to build a medium size map.

Animal: Do you still find yourself using references when making these builds or do you start with one and sway away from it and let it take its own form?

Jaku: I use references all the time. Like many of you may already know, creativity is just the ability to mix and match things together. I usually draw my own references or find some online, build a small portion of the map to see how things turn out and from that point I just build away. Sometimes If I get stuck and don't know what to do I again look at some references until I get an idea of what I want to do. Planning out your build beforehand is the key to a successful map for me. Different people have different workflows.

Animal: So I also know that you have this little pixel art giveaway going on, is the pixel art just a passtime or do you hope to do more with GFX in the future?

Jaku: Well I draw a lot in my spare time. I prefer drawing on paper and mostly keep them private because I suck at taking photos of them :) Pixel art is the only form of art I feel comfortable doing on the PC so that's the reason you only see me doing pixel art. I am not planning on doing GFX cause I love supporting other creators who are a lot better than me in that area. I will be making some renders in blender in the future. One of my 2022 goals is to learn digital art.

Animal: Good transition over, how do you think 2021 went for you and what are your other hopes for 2022?

Jaku: 2021 has been this laid back year. I would say it was quite uneventful. It was just a year where I learned and improved because everything was closed down and I had nothing better to do.
I hope 2022 will be a year that’s more alive where I can meet new and interesting people, finally, in real life too.

Animal: Are you hoping to be invited to more Roblox events in real life, such as RDC 2022?

Jaku: Would love to join the RDC. There is a lower likelihood If it will be held in the US tho but that would be a great opportunity to see “The New Continent”

Animal: New and better :P. Anyways, time for some random rapid questions and our wrap up: Do you have any favorite Roblox games on the platform, or showcases, that you did not make/contribute to?

Jaku: The most recent game that caught my eye, that I played a lot was World Zero. I still enjoy playing the classics like FE2, Bad Business or some tycoons like Theme park tycoon or retail tycoon.

Animal: Any favorite UGC items on the Roblox catalog?

Jaku: I am not much into avatar creation although I rly like the Penguin Mask created by @x0row. It gives me the chance to have a human avatar while still being a penguin when I need to test things where the penguin body is flickery.

Animal: Any advice for any developers out there who wish to step up their own builds?

Jaku: Don't give up. If something doesn't work try something else but in the same direction. Don't repeat the same mistakes. Have clear goals on what you want to do. Be honest with yourself. Collaborate with other people and learn from them. Don't be shy and ask people if you are unsure on how to make something.

Animal: Well Jaku, thank you for your time with this interview! I wish you the best of luck with your future games and commissioned work!

Jaku: Au Revoir!
